About Me

Researcher, Practitioner, and Advocate for Artistic Innovation in the Age of AI

Halley Young - My Journey in Creativity & Computation

My path has been a tapestry woven from the threads of music, poetry, and algorithmic thought. From my earliest experiments in automated music generation to deep dives into the theoretical frameworks that underpin creative systems, I have always sought to bridge the worlds of art and computation.

Academic and Professional Milestones

I earned my PhD in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2024, where my work in part centered on making AI a personal device for expression rather than a homogenizing force. Today, as a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research, I continue to challenge the boundaries of art and technology, with a focus on what truly enables and does not shut down creativity.

Whether it’s demonstrating the Turing completeness of Ableton or arguing for the aesthetic appeal of sonification, my focus remains clear: empower creatives rather than confine them to the limitations of automation.

My work is driven by a passion to infuse computational insight with artistic intuition. I invite you to explore my research on Google Scholar and join me in redefining what creativity can be in our digital age.

My Vision for the Future

I believe that in the age of AI, creativity is not diminished—it is reborn. Embracing technology as a tool, we can expand artistic expression into realms previously unimagined. Through projects that challenge conventional boundaries and invite alternative identities, I am dedicated to ensuring that AI amplifies the multiplicity of human creativity.
